Daniel Vettori captained New Zealand in the inaugural season of T20 World Cup in 2007. He lead New Zealand to the semi finals. But unfortunately, the Kiwi team lost the 1st Semi final against Pakistan by 6 runs. Therefore, they could not proceed to the finals.

Daniel Vettori captained New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2010 for the third consecutive season. However, the Kiwi team ended up third in Group E of Super 8 stage with 1 win in 3 games. Thus, they were sent home by their counterparts.
In 2012, Ross Taylor became the New Zealand captain for T20 World Cup. However, this time New Zealand could not win a single match in Super 8 stage and ended up 4th in Group 1. Brendan McCullum lead New Zealand in T20 World Cup 2014. But, New Zealand finished 3rd in group 1 of Super 10 stage. Hence, they were not allowed to go in to the finals.
